NEW HIRE – Director of Hockey Operations

July 16, 2021

The Nanaimo Minor Hockey Board of Directors are pleased to announce the hiring of Matt Hughes as our new Director of Hockey Operations effective July 15, 2021. The board would also like to thank Gaelan Patterson for helping create this first ever position within our association and wish him continue success in hockey.

The hiring of Matt Hughes comes with plenty of excitement given his very well-balanced hockey background. Not only has Matt worked in high performance his most recent experiences include programming for academy style hockey and the Head Coach and Lead of a female program in the Okanagan. Nanaimo Minor Hockey has recognized through continual trial and error that there is a need for better structure in both our selection process and our delivery of programs supported through Hockey Canada. With Matts expertise and passion for the game we are hoping that with good continual collaboration with our already in place coaching that we will have a chance to not only improve the on- ice performance of our players but also help and support for our over 300 volunteer coaches currently in place. Matt’s role with our Association will be to support the player and coach development and to give advice where needed to support the board moving forward. We are in the process of establishing a coach / player development room (NIC 1) where teaching, learning and watching the game and practices by using the latest in video technology to help our players and staff reach their end goals. Nanaimo Minor Hockey will continue to develop great young people using our sport and passion to help them further their individual life goals and this addition will only strengthen our resolve.
